ALTERNATIVE FORMAT MATERIALS

Students with disabilities who have difficulty with printed material may receive their textbooks and other classroom materials in an alternative format. Eligibility for this accommodation is determined on an individualized basis, and students must be able to demonstrate a substantial visual, mobility or learning disability. In order to assure textbook availability, all relevant textbook information must be submitted to the OSS as soon as possible. Students are responsible for obtaining this information as soon as they register for classes.

In general, 4-6 weeks notice is required to obtain alternate format materials. The OSS will make every attempt to provide material as promptly as possible. Late requests, however, will result in a delay in providing materials. Reasonable accommodations depend upon the nature and degree of severity of the documented disability. While the specific formats are requested by the student, it does not imply that a particular format must be granted if other reasonable and effective formats are available.

For eligible students, recorded books can be made available through Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic, www.rfbd.org (opens in new browser window). Students are encouraged to become individual members of RFB&D so they can develop greater independence in meeting their own needs. However, Columbia-Greene Community College does hold an institutional membership and eligible students may request books through the OSS.
