Medical Assisting is a fast-growing and versatile allied health profession. Medical Assistants perform a variety of routine administrative and clinical tasks in physicians’ offices, clinics, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, laboratories, and other healthcare settings. Since they are able to work on both the administrative and clinical side of a variety of health care facilities, medical assistants are viewed as vital members of the health care team.
A medical assistant’s clinical duties may include taking vital signs, collecting and preparing laboratory specimens and tests, drawing blood, performing ECGs, and sterilizing instruments. On the administrative side, medical assistants use computer applications, schedule appointments, update patient medical records, code, bill, and complete insurance forms, and arrange hospital admission for patients.
Phlebotomy technicians, electronic health processors, ECG technicians, physical therapy aides, lab technicians, patient care associates, billers or coders, and chiropractic aides are just a few of the diverse job opportunities available to the medical assisting graduate.
