A Message from Columbia-Greene Community College: Breaking Down Systemic Racism

Dear Columbia-Greene Community,

In light of the recent horrific tragedies that have claimed the lives of innocent people – including women of Asian descent – and other deeply disturbing incidents throughout the country, we speak out to condemn acts of racism and hatred. Sadly, the unspeakable attack in Georgia represents the latest in a troubling pattern of hate crimes targeting Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders that have emerged during the pandemic. As Albert Einstein noted, “What a sad era when it is easier to smash an atom than a prejudice.”

As educators, we must double down to fight the ignorance and intolerance that continue to erode the fabric of our great nation. Since its founding in 1966, Columbia-Greene Community College has been committed to its values of respecting all individuals who enter it doors and creating a learning and working environment where everyone can feel welcome, safe, and respected.

But words are not enough. We must do more to eradicate our society’s systemic racism. Together we can make a difference.

With peace and hope,

Dr. Carlee Drummer, President
Dr. George Timmons, Provost / Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs
Dianne Topple, Vice President for Administration / Chief Financial Officer
