Students, faculty, and staff at Columbia-Greene Community College have launched a wide array of relief efforts across campus this week, aimed at providing assistance to the communities affected by Hurricane Harvey.
The college is actively participating in a state-wide effort dubbed SUNY Strong, collecting cash donations to be converted into needed supplies and delivered to Texas aboard SUNY Maritime’s training vessel, the Empire State VI. SUNY Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson said the initiative has been adopted across the SUNY system, and supported on the state level by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo.
“We have kept in our thoughts and prayers a city whose infrastructure has been devastatingly compromised and whose residents have experienced terrible loss,” she said. “With the Empire State VI heading to Beaumont next weekend, SUNY has a new opportunity to contribute.”
In addition, the athletics department at C-GCC, lead by Athletics Director Richanna Lindo, has joined forces with the National Junior College Athletic Association to offer sales of a shirt from which all proceeds will directly benefit the 21 NJCAA colleges in southeast Texas and their communities, by aiding in rebuilding efforts. Shirts will be sold by the C-GCC Athletic Department for $15 through Friday, Sept. 8.
Anthony Williams, student and president of the Political Science Club on campus, worked with student activities following the disaster to collect monetary donations during the college’s busy Welcome Week, including during its annual barbeque on Thursday, Sept. 7.
“I made donations and sent a care package myself, but I felt it would be cool if Houston had Co-Greene’s support,” Williams said, noting that C-GCC’s Animal Advocates Club soon followed suit, collecting donations of pet supplies for the many displaced animals in the flood zone.
Relief drives will continue throughout the week, and monetary donations may be made to SUNY Strong online: http://www.suny.edu/impactfoundation/. To purchase a #NJCAACares t-shirt, e-mail the Athletics Department at C-GCC: email@example.com.
