The Corrections Officer Academy for individuals seeking careers in municipal corrections will return to C-GCC Monday, March 11.
Corrections Officers play an intrinsic role in ensuring the safety and security of our communities, and no CO enters any facility without specialized training and mentorship.
Municipal corrections is also a field that offers rewarding career options and opportunities for advancement in the public safety sector – in supervisory, administrative, and even investigative roles.
With this in mind, the Corrections Officer Academy at C-GCC was established in 2018, to both prepare and inspire individuals seeking careers in municipal corrections in city- and county-operated facilities.
The result of a partnership between the college and the corrections divisions of the Columbia and Greene County Sheriffs’ Offices, this pre-employment, basic-training academy is approved by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), andtaught by experienced corrections or law enforcement officers who hold DCJS Instructor Certifications.
The 12-week course meets in the evenings with some weekend sessions, covering more than 211 hours of class material including:
- Introduction to Security and Supervision
- Corrections and the U.S. Constitution
- Defensive Tactics
- Written and Verbal Communication
- Penal Law
- Investigations by Peace Officers
Upon completion of the program, graduates will have met all phase-one requirements of the DCJS Basic Course for Corrections Officers; phase two is completed post-employment.
